OAEI: ontology matching

The Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative is a yearly international campaign: teams submit their matching system, it is evaluated on shared datasets, and the results are presented at the Ontology Matching workshop, co-located with ISWC.

I first took part in 2018, during my postdoc at IRIT (SmartOccitania project), with Holontology, a system for holistic matching: aligning several ontologies at once rather than two at a time. The same work led, with Imen Megdiche, Olivier Teste and Cássia Trojahn, to a method for building reference alignments from relaxed cliques in a graph (EKAW 2018), since no evaluation sets existed for that case.

Since 2022, with Olivier Teste, I have entered TOMATO: results for 2022, 2023 and 2024. What interests me here goes beyond the score: being able to explain why the system kept a given correspondence, and what a human can check.

DUCK: typing on a touchscreen you cannot see

My PhD (IRIT, ELIPSE team, 2013 to 2017, supervised by Mathieu Raynal) dealt with text entry on smartphones for visually impaired people. On a touch keyboard, a blind user does not know exactly where their finger lands, and finding each key by exploring it with a screen reader is very slow.

DUCK (Deductive Keyboard) accepts that imprecision: the user types approximately, and the keyboard deduces the possible words from the sequence of positions. What remains is picking the right word from a list, which led to separate work:

  • LOVIE, a word list optimised for non-visual selection (UAHCI 2016);
  • SWIFT, a solution for short words, where deduction has the least information to go on (ICCHP 2016).

DUCK was presented at MOBACC in 2013 and at IHM in 2015, then evaluated in daily use (ICCHP 2018). The full thesis (in French) is available on theses.fr.

Cooperation with the CDDS (Rodez)

The Centre départemental pour déficients sensoriels (the Aveyron centre for people with sensory impairments), in Rodez, supports children and teenagers aged 0 to 20 with visual or hearing impairments or language disorders. With the centre, I run Java development projects around disability with my students at 3iL Ingénieurs: the needs come from the young people and the centre's staff, the code comes from the students.
